Fiction Department embodies what I believe in and stand for, it is an expression of my thoughts and actions.
It is a way of operating. It is an attitude, a process, a way of being or existing. It is a ________ blankety blank chequebook and pen.
Well maybe not that last one, however, it is slightly complex but that is not to say it is complicated. Let me explain…
Fiction department is born on 2 basic principles. The first being that it is driven by an intrinsic set of values, which are:
Self Expression – Be expressive, be bold and be yourself.
Conversation – Collaborate and communicate with interesting folk for a richer social and learning experience.
Play – Have fun, exercise a sense of humour and don’t stress too much.
Confrontation – Challenge norms, question status, debate ideas and proactively comment.
Sustainability – Commit to the long term of my own development and that of the industry, and try to give something back.
The second principle is simply to practice with autonomy but without hierarchy. Meaning that if we are to work together then that’s what
will happen - We will work together. I believe that when you are in a structure that relies heavily on delegation and one-way instruction,
through a chain of command then you’re pretty much screwed. Well maybe not… but you are limited or constrained at least to operating
in a way that is fundamentally anti-creative. When you instruct someone to do something, you negate their creativity. This is fine for many
and essential in the army but within a creative framework, I think there is a more conducive approach. So, I prefer to involve and share
with people for commonality, discuss and debate concepts and solutions in pursuit of innovation, even if it’s sometimes a difficult or
turbulent affair. I like to maintain a working environment that promotes openness and creative self-questioning at all times. I look to build
relationships with these principals in mind. It is empowering for all aspects of the creative process, and I find that the people and end
product are overwhelmingly better off for it.
